May the 14th marks a significant day in Fiji’s rich and colourful history, as the day where the indentured labourers from India landed on the tropical shores of Fiji. The ships sailed for two months in 1879 from Calcutta, India carrying over 500 Indians that would soon become a part of Fiji’s culture, even to this day. We remember those who toiled hard for the precious and coveted Fijian sugar as well as their fight for the freedom of their people. We thank these people that many regard as their ancestors and the contributions of the labourers in building Fiji towards greater heights.
